Halifax has a population of approximately half a million and fortunately for you, not many of these people are in any way affiliated with trading scrap metal. To add to this, there is a huge demand for many different types of metal in Halifax, so scrap metal prices are good throughout the year. There are some notable peaks between May and August, but outside of this period the prices for most materials remain at a good level relative to other cities in Canada.
Halifax scrap metal prices are typically driven by manufacturing cycles in many of the cities metal yards, when manufacturing levels are at their highest you will see scrap metal prices peak. These pricing fluctuations can be observed in many other cities and provinces, however they are definitely more prominent in Halifax.
Due to the high demand for scrap metal (mainly lead and brass) in the city, the local scrap yards have had legislation restricting the trading of them relaxed, the effect has been a surge in materials being recycled at these facilities. Previously you would be required to take photographic identification, proof that you owned the metal and would need a fingerprint taken too. Now it is a lot more straightforward to sell your scrap metal for cash, you just need to weigh your material and then take it to the dealer.
It is probably one of the most favourable cities to be based in if you like to trade metal to scrap yards. By far the best scrap dealers in the city are John Ross & Sons Ltd in Halifax and John Ross & Sons Ltd in Truro (technically Nova Scotia). We found that John Ross provided people with a much better price than almost all other scrap yards, so we would of course recommend taking any scrap metal for sale there.
