Indiana, also known as "the Hoosier State", is a Midwestern state with a long background and reliance on manufacturing as a driver of the economy. It's been less affected by the decline of Rust Belt manufacturers than other Midwestern states. Therefore demand for metal (and thus scrap metal) remains high as ever.
Before you start selling your scrap metal it makes sense to know a bit about the local laws. The laws in Indiana are fairly typical for both those selling and buying scrap metal. We have been through the Indiana legislature and summarized everything that you will need to know when buying and selling scrap metal.
First thing to note is that you are always required to show ID. This true in all states in the US. A copy of your ID will need to be kept as well as a photo of the material and a photo of you at the time of the transaction. All this will be kept with a transaction record which will need to be kept for a minimum of at least 2 years. Finally, law enforcement have the legal power to put a tag and hold on any good within a scrap yard for at least 5 days. There are more laws surrounding the sale of scrap metal in Indiana however, they are not relevant for most transactions. If they apply to you, then the scrap yard will help you with this. It is always important to know the best scrap yards within your region.
We have done the research on some of Indiana's major cities and found, what we believe, to be their best scrap yards. Indianapolis is the state capital and largest city in Indiana. It has a great manufacturing heritage. Our recommendation for the best scrap yards are: West side Auto Salvage and Farnsworth Metal Recycling.
Below is a list of cities in Indiana for which we have looked up the latest scrap metal prices and the best scrap yards.
